book releases

Google Book Search scans books and makes them searchable. They didn’t ask authors and publishers for permission to do this, since they considered it to be fair use. They only displayed small snippets of text without an agreement with the publishers, and they linked to ways to purchase the full book online.

However, not everyone saw it that way, and Google was sued. Google has agreed to a class-action settlement. If you wrote a book and still retain copyright, you may be eligible to claim your book.

What does claiming your book gain you? If your book is out of print but still protected by copyright, you could get a share of the advertising revenue on the book, which will be available to read online. That’s more than you’d receive if someone bought your book in a used book store. If you don’t want to be part of the settlement, you must opt out by May 5, 2009.
